This is a special CPU. It’s called a Ryzen 5 1600 “AF”. In the product code, you can see the letters ‘... AF BOX’ but they note a product update. This is a 1600 but with a die shrink to 12nm. Effectively, its an R5-2600 for all intents and purposes...its just 100mhz slower. They ran out of 14nm dies and the 1600 was still selling on the extreme budget end, so they did something to fill the gap until the 3100x and 3300x chips show up, but neither one of them will have 6 cores, like this one.
$85 msrp!!! it’s a friggin steal for anything on a budget, will be able to game with the best of them at 6 cores and 12 threads of processing, and can overclock to 4.2 if I wanted to run up the voltage. But, honestly, this is going into the kid’s computer. With....
...the stock Wraith Max cooler that came with my 3700x, a chip that burns 50% more power than this “1600 A s F uck” chip.
Cooling lesson No.1: If you want silence, exceed the minimum standard, overcompensate so the solution hardly has to work at it, therefore the fans don’t spin like crazy hairdryers powered by hornets and anger your significant other/roommate to the point where they drink all of your good beer without asking or remove sex from life equations - without asking.
I saw !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (stealth, wraith, max), and this one ran barely audible on a 2600 keeping it way way way under max temperatures, which will be wonderful because within the kids box they will use a 1050ti basic card for everything they could possibly need to do on a 60 Hz monitor, and stacked under it will be the trusty 1070 for folding 100% of the time, sucking the air up from the bottom intake screen it faces at a quarter inch away. That way it’s air feed is independent of the rest of the case. The heat generated from both cards is about equal to a 2060 super. This cooler will have headroom to deal with it. Plus, I’m moving to air cooling which will have less restriction of exhaust air out the top. The old box was only good at cooling quietly up to 375 watts. I’ll be about there with this build.
I’m removing the liquid cooling system and selling it on craigslist or offerup. Again, let me know if you in Denver and would like a not yet 2 year used corsair 280 AIO with rgb.

This is a big benefit of continuing a socket with chipset compatibility more than one generation at a time (looking at you Intel!)
I love strange tech unicorns like this processor.

My brother picked up an AF chip a couple months back....pretty solid CPU but lacking in O C potential, apparently.
That cooler is a beast on that chip for sure, nice setup!
I’m thinking about getting a high- end, low profile Noctua for my 3400g media setup, the stock wrai th has an annoying hum at very low speeds.

Have strongly considered picking one of those up for the B350 board that died in an unfortunate bios flashing incident but I’m not confident I care to try to recover the board itself.

Great msi b450 max boards are under 100 at microcenter. Ready to go. But the 1600af prices are rising from resellers and limited supply. The 3300x will show up soon.
